Riding among the Cherry Blossoms

The hill that we frequent for our training rides in Furano has been transformed in to a sea of pink.  The cherry blossoms are in full bloom and the usually deserted spot was crowded with people.

There is a real appreciation for cherry blossoms in Japan which is nurtured from a young age, like the appreciation for taking hot-spring baths.  I am sure most families have pictures of their children, from infancy through to their teens under the cherry blossom tree.

For the grown ups it is a good excuse for a party, which is called a ‘Hanami’   or cherry blossom viewing party.  This custom dates back to the 8th century to the Heian Period, when the then emperor would hold parties under cherry blossoms, writing poems on the petals to signify the beauty, yet  brief life that we live.

For some, walking under the trees  is a time to contemplate and renew their spirits, but for most it is seen as a time for a party. I didn’t see one drink today though, as it seemed that everyone was more interested in the magnificent views than anything else. Maybe because it is a work day tomorrow?

As for us, we saved the beer for when we got home.

  1. Love the top photo. Is that the road up to the hilltop observatory at Asahi ga Oka park?

    • Yes it is. I have been informed that I am not allowed to make any single track up there though.
